What To Expect
We've met, we have a vision, and have a signed contract in place. The fun can begin with planning! Although I'll be getting with you to discuss our plan, this guide will cover some major topics and help you be more prepared.
We’ll be covering:
o clothing choices,
o what to bring,
o during the session,
o and after the session.
Wardrobe
Choosing a wardrobe for the family can be a very stressful task. Not only can it be stressful to simply find things that match, but what will look good on camera?
I typically advise choosing an "anchor piece", like momma’s dress, and help design the family’s outfits around that. To start, I have my (small but growing) client wardrobe that is packed with colors I love to photograph and edit! What is a client wardrobe? This is a small collection of dresses and outfits I have that are yours to use for your session. It might be a great choice for you if you want to wear something new, but may not see a reason to wear it in the future! If you love to shop, I’ll show you some of my favorite colors to work with and photograph. These colors work great for summer, fall, and even Christmas!
But, there are a few rules to adding pattern to your family’s outfit. Plan your pattern choice to include colors others are wearing. Try not to add too many pattern pieces. One or two is more than enough! Textures are your best friend! Think satin, chiffon ruffles, lace, and velvet.
Accessories
• Hats are cute, but can cast dark shadows on the wearer’s face. Avoid hats with wide brims that will cover the face. If you love a hat, try to choose a lighter color like grey, cream, or a light straw to minimize shadows.
• If you choose jewelry, choose pieces that are authentic to you and are not overwhelming to your clothing choice.
• Leave Apple watches, hair bands, sunglasses, purses, and other daily items in the car if you can. If you must bring them, put items in a weatherproof backpack to easily tote around and drop when needed.
• Wear shoes that match but are appropriate for the location. Heels and wedges are not recommended. We may be walking, and may encounter spots that are “off the beaten path”.
What NOT to Wear
I want you to wear what represents you as a person and a family! Please don't feel pressured to wear a certain style or dress in a way that feels uncomfortable.
Although the above is true, there are some items that should be avoided:
• Neons and overly bright colors. These colors are not very well-read by camera sensors and can very quickly lose depth. It is difficult to accurately edit the colors, and can affect skin tones in post-processing. I ask that clients avoid neons for this reason.
• Pitch black or stark white. Black and white are extremely common colors to wear, but I generally advise to avoid these colors. Black can easily blend into the background or shadows, and cause the person's shirt or black article of clothing to end up looking like a "black hole". Stark white can do the opposite; it can easily become washed out. Opt for lighter clothing like grey in place of black, or cream in place of white.
• "Street" clothing. Your favorite pair of gym tennies might never leave your feet when you head out, but they might not pair the greatest with the khakis you've chosen to wear. Try to avoid articles of clothing that might clash with your outfit or the family's overall theme. Think "Sunday best". Hey Dudes shoes are a very popular choice for the boys; they're comfortable, yet stylish!
What to Bring to Your Session
• The seasons can be very confusing. It might be 100 degrees, or 40 degrees. Please prepare by bringing water and jackets if needed. Blankets and shawls make for great accessories while staying warm!
• Hair ties and bobby pins are important for encountering windy situations.
• For littles, favorite toys can be a great way to keep them occupied or feel more comfortable in front of the camera!
• You are welcome to bring snacks if it’s nearing dinnertime.
If you wear glasses, consider using contacts for the session. If you’re able to see decently without them, consider leaving them off. Glasses can produce glare, covering the eyes. Unfortunately, it is incredibly difficult to remove a large glare through editing. Please keep this important tip in mind.

After our session, I will contact you to schedule our gallery reveal appointment! We may schedule this appointment (online or at my studio) 2-4 weeks after the session. During our gallery reveal, you may choose your images and package add-ons!
